Viralterkini.idJakarta – The world of social media has become noisy! A number of Instagram accounts simultaneously distributed video clips of Jusuf Kalla (JK)’s lectures with narratives accusing the national figure of slandering and insulting Christian teachings.
The video clip immediately went viral and sparked strong reactions. In the footage circulating, JK is heard mentioning the term “martyrdom” in the context of the Poso and Ambon conflict, which is then twisted as if he was conveying religious teachings.
However, the facts behind the video are much different!
Video Cut, Meaning Completely Changed
The video circulating is only a small part of JK’s lecture at the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Campus Mosque, Yogyakarta, on March 5 2026.
In the piece, JK said that in the Poso and Ambon conflicts, both conflicting parties considered death in war as “martyrdom”. This narrative was then twisted by a number of accounts with accusations that JK was “lying” about Christian teachings.
In fact, the real context is not a theological lecture, but an explanation of the history of the conflict!
Firm Clarification: This is a Field Fact, Not a Religious Teaching
JK’s spokesman, Husain Abdullah, spoke up and strongly denied these accusations.
According to him, JK was explaining the social reality when the Poso and Ambon conflict broke out – not teaching any religious doctrine.
“What Mr. JK conveyed were the facts on the ground when the conflict took place. Both parties used religious symbols and claimed holy war. That is why the conflict is said to have racial nuances,” said Husain.
He also emphasized that JK’s statement was aimed at correcting the misconception that was currently developing in society.
It’s actually straightening, not misleading
Furthermore, Husain revealed that JK has always been known as a figure who tries to stop conflicts, not worsen the atmosphere.
On various occasions, JK emphasized that acts of violence committed during conflict were not “holy war”, but rather violations of human values.
“Mr JK emphasized that killing without a valid reason does not lead to heaven, quite the opposite. It is a correction of a distorted understanding,” he said.
Undisputed Historical Facts
The Poso and Ambon conflict that occurred around 27 years ago has indeed become one of the biggest tragedies with racial nuances in Indonesia.

Around 2,000 people died in Poso
More than 5,000 people died in Ambon
Through JK’s role as a mediator, the conflict finally subsided through the Malino I Negotiations and Malino II Negotiations which gave birth to the Malino Declaration – an important milestone for Indonesian peace.
From Viral to Clarification
This case is a clear example of how video footage without context can trigger major misunderstandings in the public.
Instead of insulting religion, JK is actually warning about the dangers of misuse of religious symbols in conflict – an important lesson so that dark history does not repeat itself.
