Viralterkini.id, Jakarta – The Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Oncology Surgery Association (Peraboi) and the Indonesian Family Doctors Association (PDKI) held a training entitled “The Role of Family Doctors in Assistance of Breast Cancer Patients”.
The agenda held for two days, namely on July 25-26, 2025 was attended by 40 family doctors from the Jakarta area as part of the Public Education Campaign at the London School of Public Relations (LSPR) campus, Jakarta. All the costs of organizing this training are borne by the Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI) as part of commitment.
Breast cancer is currently the most common type of cancer experienced by the people of Indonesia, with the highest number in the group of women. Globocan data in 2020 noted that there were 68,858 new cases of breast cancer or around 16.6% of all types of cancer, and contributed more than 22,000 deaths each year. Ironically, around 70% of new patients are known when they have entered an advanced stage, which significantly reduces life opportunities and increases medical costs.
This shows the importance of the early detection approach through self -awareness (self -examination) and Sadanis (clinical breast examination), as well as comprehensive assistance by medical personnel, especially family doctors who have direct closeness with patients in the primary service system.
This agenda is with the aim of strengthening the role of family doctors as the front guard in handling breast cancer and increasing primary service capacity and can be part of a joint effort in reducing the delay in diagnosis and increasing continuous support for breast cancer patients in Indonesia.
In his opening remarks, YKPI Chairperson, Linda Agum Gumelar, stressed the importance of the role of family doctors in a long journey of breast cancer patients. According to him, the health service system often only highlights the role of referral hospitals and specialist doctors, even though the most meaningful mentoring often starts long before the patient arrives at a large hospital – that is from the practice room of the family doctors.

“Mr/Family doctor is the first person to meet the patient. You know the medical history, even the emotional side. In your hands, not just diagnosis, but the first hope of the patient begins,” Linda said.
Furthermore, Linda highlighted the need for a comprehensive collaboration in building a more humane breast cancer service ecosystem, touching medical and psychosocial aspects.
In his remarks, Linda invited all participants to not only understand medical steps such as Birth and Sadanis, but also became a complex referral system and consistent emotional support.
“We believe in the synergy between foundations, government, hospitals, and especially family doctors, we can build a mentoring system that is not only comprehensive, but also full of empathy,” he said.
This activity was also supported by the Founder and CEO of the London School of Public Relations, Dr. (HC) Prita Kemal Gani, Mba., Mcipr., Apr., FIPR. who were present at a very important event.
“I strongly support the activities carried out by YKPI, because I have a personal experience which, my mother is also one of the people or sufferers of breast cancer and by Sabab I want all women to be given knowledge about breast cancer, hopefully this training can be good in communication between family doctors, patients and also families because whatever communication is done is Badnews so how to preach this Badnews so However, we can find out from the beginning then we can overcome together and we do treatment, everything that is done together and there is treatment there is always hope for healing and kindness, “said the Founder and CEO of London School of Public Relations, Dr. (HC) Prita Kemal Gani, Mba., Mcipr., Apr., FIPR.
This is a very important strategic role of family doctors. Family doctors not only handle the physical complaints of the patient, but also acts as a listener, support, and referral connections to advanced level services if an indication of malignancy is found. They have a central role in the education of healthy behavior and prevention, initial detection through clinical examination (Sadanis), effective communication during the delivery of diagnosis, monitoring of patients after surgery or therapy, psychosocial support for patients and their families.
This activity is also an implementation of a memorandum of understanding between YKPI, Peraboi, and PDKI signed in May 2023 to strengthen the synergy between service lines in handling breast cancer.
This training will take place in two major sessions that include medical, psychological, and communication aspects. (ma)
