This momentum is at the same time used to confirm and inaugurate the Management of the Wildlife Police Observer (PPS), an independent forum that was established to support the protection of animals and strengthen the synergy between the National Police and civil society.
In the event that took place solemnly and full of collaborative enthusiasm, there were various elements of society, academics, environmental organizations, and representatives of government agencies and non -governmental organizations that had been active in the issue of animal conservation.
PPS: Bridge of Conservation and Law Enforcement Synergy General Chairperson of Wildlife Police, Monica Fany Megawati, said that the formation of PPS was motivated by the increase in threats to the sustainability of wildlife in Indonesia.
“Illegal hunting, protected animal trade, and the destruction of habitat becomes a serious alarm for the sustainability of animals in Indonesia. PPS is present as an independent participatory space, to bridge the interests between the community, academics, conservation organizations, and the National Police in strengthening the governance of animal protection. We want to become a critical partner, but constructive,
Monica also stressed that PPS will focus on policy monitoring activities, public education, study publications, and become a coordination center for various stakeholders who care about the issue of animal protection.
Police Director of the Police Korsabhara Baharkam Police, Brigadier General Tory Kristianto, SIK, stated that the urgency of the formation of animal police observers was in line with the challenges faced by the Ditpolsatwa in handling crime against animals in the field. And the National Police welcomed this collaboration.
“Our work in the field faces complex challenges-starting from the lack of information from the community, the increasingly sophisticated animal illegal trade network, to the limitations of resources. Therefore, the existence of PPS as a social supervision partner and the delivery of public aspirations is very important to encourage transparency, accountability, and work effectiveness of Ditpolsatwa,” said Brigadier General Tory. He also added that PPS would be part of a major strategy in realizing collaborative, adaptive, and participatory animal protection governance, as well as supporting national and international commitments in the preservation of biodiversity.
On the same occasion, Kombes Pol Gatot Aris Purbaya, SIK, as the Head of the Ditpolsatwa Tracking and Determination, announced that Central Ditpolsatwa compiled a plan to form a wildlife detachment (Den Satli) as a special unit to respond to public complaints related to crimes against animals.
“Den Satli will become a tactical unit that is ready to move quickly in the field. This is part of structural reform and efforts to strengthen the police’s response to cases of animal exploitation. Through partnerships with PPS, we will receive initial reports, tracking up, until the legal action process in a professional manner,” explained Kombes Gatot.
Den Satli, he continued, was designed to work across regions with a reporting system involving the community and supported by a solid database and partner networking from conservation organizations.
Fiqh Hardana Yuwanza, as the daily chairman of the Wildlife Police Observer, added that in the near future PPS was designing educational conservation land and Eco Tourism which would become an integrated area between education, conservation and sustainable tourism.
“One of our excellent programs is the development of civet breeding for ethical and sustainable civet coffee cultivation. This captivity does not only function as a center for community economic development, but also as a means of public education about the importance of good treatment of animals,” said Fiqh. In addition, PPS will also start the 1,000 Bringin Tree Planting Program (fikus) on the riverbanks as part of the natural habitat rehabilitation efforts and erosion prevention.
“Bringin trees have an important ecological role as home to various types of animals, especially birds and primates. This planting will be carried out in stages by involving local communities, students, and conservation partners,” he added.
The 2025-2030 animal protection roadmap is public advocacy and education, case monitoring and reporting, policy studies and recommendations, strengthening of animal data and information centers as well as the development of cross -sectoral and international partnerships.
With the vision of being a strategic, independent and trusted forum, PPS is expected to be able to increase collective awareness, accelerate case handling, and encourage policies that are in favor of the preservation of animals in the context of sustainable development. (ma)
