Persita coach, Carlos Pena, revealed that the competition break of almost a month was utilized optimally to increase the team’s readiness, both in terms of tactics and the physical condition of the players.
“Playing in Surabaya is never easy for any team. They have a strong mentality, high motivation and extraordinary support from the fans. But we also have the same mentality and motivation,” said Pena.
The Spanish coach added that the positive trend achieved by his team was an important asset to face this crucial match. He is also optimistic that his team will be able to provide maximum resistance.
“We came in with some good results and had a very good season. We will fight as usual, and I hope to get the three points,” he continued.
Pena also assessed that Persebaya’s crushing 1-5 defeat to Borneo FC in the previous match did not reflect the real strength of the opposing team.
“I think it was an unfair result. They were still ahead until the 60th minute before the game changed. Persebaya is still a very strong team with quality players,” explained the 42 year old coach.
He emphasized that this match will be tight considering that the two teams are in close positions on the standings, so Persita’s main focus is to perform with the best performance.
Meanwhile, Persita goalkeeper, Igor Rodrigues, enthusiastically welcomed this match. He admitted that his team couldn’t wait to feel the competitive atmosphere again after the long break.
“This is a match that we have prepared well for. We as players certainly don’t like going too long without competing, so we are really looking forward to this match,” said Igor.
