Prosecutor Files Cassation Against Fariz RM’s Verdict

Viralterkini.id, Jakarta — Public Prosecutor (JPU) Indah Puspitarani, SH, MH officially filed an appeal against the decision of the panel of judges at the South Jakarta District Court (PN) which sentenced musician Fariz RM to 10 months in prison in a narcotics abuse case.

Quoting data from the South Jakarta District Court’s Case Tracking Information System (SIPP), the cassation request was registered on Tuesday, October 11 2025 by Public Prosecutor Indah Puspitarani.

Indah explained that this legal step was taken because the panel of judges’ decision was deemed not commensurate with the seriousness of the defendant’s actions and not in accordance with the prosecutor’s previous demands, namely 6 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 800 million, subsidiary to 6 months in prison.

“This cassation is a form of the Prosecutor’s commitment to consistently enforcing the law, especially against perpetrators of narcotics crimes. We must not give room for the view that drug abuse can be tolerated,” said Indah in a written statement received by Prokabar, Wednesday (12/11/2025).

The prosecutor’s move received support from legal practitioners. The Indonesian Legal Practitioners Association (PPHI) believes that the 10 month prison sentence against Fariz RM does not reflect the public’s sense of justice and has the potential to weaken efforts to eradicate drugs in the country.

PPHI representative, Elman Alfin Bago, assessed that the decision did not have a deterrent effect on perpetrators of narcotics abuse.

“This decision has the potential to set a bad precedent for the justice system. Law enforcement in drug cases must give a firm message that narcotics abuse is a serious crime that will damage the nation’s generation,” stressed Elman. (dp)
