VIRALTERKINI.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian sports world is grieving over the death of the Major General of the TNI (Ret.) Dr. (HC) I Gusti Kompyang Manila, or familiarly known as IGK Manila.
The figure, nicknamed “Mr. Wushu Indonesia”, breathed his last at the Bunda Menteng Hospital, Jakarta, on Monday (8/18/2025) at 08.59 WIB.
This sad news raises a deep loss, especially for the Indonesian achievement sports community.
The Chairperson of the Central KONI, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Marciano Norman, expressed his last condolences and respect.
“As the KONI Pusat Ketum, representing the Indonesian achievement sports community, I utter a deep sorrow,” Marciano said in his statement.
Marciano emphasized that the deceased was an important figure who contributed a lot in developing national sports.
“Thank you, appreciation, and the highest respect for Mr. Igk Manila who has so many services for Indonesian achievement sports,” he said.
Furthermore, Marciano called Igk Manila the central figure behind the development of the wushu sport in the country.
“He is Mr. Wushu Indonesia. Now we see how wushu is developing rapidly and often makes Indonesia proud through the achievements of his athletes,” he added.
Marciano also emphasized that the fighting spirit of IGK Manila will continue to be continued by the next generation of national sports.
“Goodbye. We will continue your struggle for Indonesian sports. Hopefully the deceased will get the best place on the side of God, and the family left behind is given strength,” he concluded.
Besides being known as a wushu figure, Igk Manila also left a long trail in the world of Indonesian football.
He was once the manager of the Indonesian national team and played an important role in winning a gold medal at the 1991 SEA Games in Manila.
At the club level, his work is no less brilliant. The deceased contributed to bringing Bandung Raya to win the 1996 Indonesian League.
A few years later, he was successful with Persija Jakarta who appeared as the 2001 Indonesian League champions.
A number of actions made IGK Manila as one of the Sports Figures, with a big influence at both national and international levels.
The nickname of Mr. Wushu Indonesia was pinned not without reason. Initially, Manila got a direct mandate from the Chairperson of the Central KONI at the time, General Purn Surono Reksodimedjo.
He who at that time served as Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Contingent was asked to prepare the Wushu Branch to perform at the 1993 Singapore SEA Games.
Although it does not have a background of wushu, Manila moves quickly. He sought information to various Chinese communities to get support from Mediteransyah Masnadi, a Taichi activist.
Together with Masnadi, he began to compile the management of Wushu Indonesia and established intensive communication with various parties, including the Ministry of Home Affairs (Ministry of Home Affairs) and Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security, Sudomo.
His hard efforts paid off. Wushu Indonesia was formed as an official organization and developed rapidly.
In just a matter of years, this sport is one of the contributors to international achievements for Indonesia.
The homeland wushu athletes repeatedly made a medal in the Asian and World event.
It was the big contribution that made the name Igk Manila attached to the nickname of Mr. Wushu Indonesia.
IGK Manila was born in Singaraja, Bali, on July 8, 1942. He is a graduate of Akmil 1964 and pursued a military career to retire with the rank of Major General of the TNI.
Beyond military duties, he actively devotes himself in the world of sports, both as an administrator, manager, and mentor for the younger generation.
Throughout his life, Manila is known as a firm person, disciplined, but warm to athletes and colleagues.
His figure is considered capable of bridging the world of sports with various state institutions.
The departure of IGK Manila left deep sorrow, but also a large legacy in the form of dedication and struggle in the world of sports.
Its role in building the foundation of Wushu Indonesia, fostering the soccer national team, to lead big clubs to win the title will always be remembered.
For the world of Indonesian sports, IGK Manila is not only a character, but also inspiration. His figure showed that hard work, dedication, and unyielding spirit were able to give birth to a proud achievement in the international arena.
With the passing of IGK Manila, Indonesian sport loses one of the nation’s best sons.
However, the enthusiasm and trace of his struggle are believed to continue to live in every step of the next generation who continue his struggle in the sports field.
